RESUMO: A cultura de tecidos é uma técnica importante para avaliar a influência da luz no desenvolvimento das plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o cultivo in vitro de cultivares de Ocimum basilicum sob diferentes fontes de luz. Primeiramente, foi avaliado o efeito de fontes de luz fluorescentes e LEDs (Diodo emissores de luz amarela, azul, verde e vermelha) em cinco cultivares de manjericão (Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla, Italian Large, Limoncino e Maria Bonita); e posteriormente o efeito de duas lâmpadas LED (Growlux e Azul). As lâmpadas amarelas não proporcionaram um bom desenvolvimento das plantas de manjericão in vitro. Verificou-se que o tamanho das raízes e massa fresca nas cultivares Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla e Limoncino nas duas condições luminosas foram semelhantes. A condição luminosa das lâmpadas Growlux promoveu maior número de folhas, massa fresca e seca quando comparada com lâmpadas LED azuis nas cultivares Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla e Limoncino. Assim, concluiu-se que as lâmpadas Growlux promovem uma maior quantidade de biomassa de manjericão.

ABSTRACT: Tissue culture is an important technique for assessing the influence of light on plant growth. This study evaluated the in vitro cultivation of Ocimum basilicum cultivars under different light sources. First, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of fluorescent and LED (Light Emitting Diode) light sources (yellow, blue, green, and red) on five basil cultivars (Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla, Italian Large, Limoncino, and Maria Bonita), followed by, another experiment, with two LED lights (Growlux and Blue). In vitro basil plants did not exhibit good growth under yellow lamps. The size of the roots of Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla and Limoncino cultivars under the two light conditions were similar. Moreover, the luminous condition of the Growlux lamps generated a greater quantity of leaves and fresh, and dry weight than blue LED lamps for Cinnamon, Grecco a Palla and Limoncino cultivars. Thus, it was concluded that the Growlux lamps promoted a greater amount of basil biomass.

ABSTRACT. Removal of lettuce basal leaves is a technique used by the seed industry; however, the effects on seed production and physiological potential are unknown. Genetic dissimilarity is fundamental in the identification of individuals in terms of traits of interest, although it is rarely considered in relation to seeds that are tolerant to thermoinhibition. The aim of this study was to ascertain the relationship between defoliation of lettuce plants and seed yield/physiological quality, as well as the genetic dissimilarity among genotypes with regard to seed thermoinhibition. We used 35 lines of biofortified lettuce, the cultivars Uberlândia 10000, Belíssima, UFU MC BIOFORT1, and Everglades (tolerant to thermoinhibition), and Grand Rapids and Verônica (susceptible to thermoinhibition). The seed yield and physiological quality of the genotypes with and without defoliation were evaluated, artificially aged, and germinated at four temperatures in a factorial arrangement. The genetic dissimilarity was estimated by Tocher graphing and the UPGMA clustering method, based on the Mahalanobis generalized distance (D2 ii). Four UFU genotypes and Grand Rapids had high seed yields. With removal of basal leaves, there was higher seed yield per plant and there was an effect on their physiological quality. The genotypes exhibited genetic variability for thermoinhibition, with UFU-86#2#1#1 and Everglades showing similar performance.

ABSTRACT Brazilian producers have been seeking to improve garlic productivity and quality via vernalization at negative temperatures. However, more concrete information about the application and effects of this technique on the productivity and quality of noble garlic varieties is lacking. Moreover, there are also questions about the use and influence of seed cloves at different maturation points on this crop’s yield. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of vernalization temperatures and different maturation points of seed cloves on the yield and quality of noble garlic cultivars. Three experiments were conducted using the Ito cultivar over three garlic planting seasons in Cristalina, GO, Brazil. The experimental design followed a 3 x 3 factorial scheme: three vernalization temperature ranges (-1 to -3 °C; 1 to 3 °C; and 2 to 4 °C) and three seed clove maturation points (normal, early and late). Plant height, aboveground fresh mass, bulbar ratio, and bulb yield and quality were evaluated after harvesting. The negative vernalization temperature had significant results with the highest garlic yields occurring in all three planting seasons, with a considerable increase in the quantity of bulbs with better commercial value (‘class 6’) and a decrease in the quantity of ‘discard’ bulbs. In comparison to the other temperatures, negative vernalization temperatures also yielded higher fresh plants in all evaluated seasons. The normal maturation point resulted in gains in total bulb yield. The use of below-zero vernalization temperatures increased the productivity of the garlic cultivar Ito under the conditions found in Brazil.

RESUMO Os produtores brasileiros têm buscado melhorar a produtividade e a qualidade do alho, aplicando a técnica de vernalização com temperaturas negativas. No entanto, faltam informações mais concretas sobre os efeitos e aplicação desta técnica na produtividade e qualidade do alho nobre. Existem dúvidas também sobre o uso de bulbilhos-sementes com diferentes pontos de maturação e sua influência na produção desta cultura. Portanto, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de temperaturas de vernalização, incluindo temperaturas negativas e diferentes pontos de maturação do bulbilho-semente, sobre a produtividade e a qualidade do alho-nobre. Foram conduzidos 3 experimentos, em três épocas de plantio de alho, com a variedade Ito, nas condições de Cristalina, GO, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi em esquema fatorial 3 x 3, sendo três faixas de temperatura de vernalização (-1 a -3 ºC; 1 a 3 ºC e 2 a 4 ºC) e três pontos de maturação de bulbilho-semente (precoce, normal e tardio). Foram avaliadas altura de plantas, massa fresca da parte aérea e razão bulbar, além de produtividade e qualidade de bulbos, após a colheita. Nas três épocas de plantio, a temperatura negativa de vernalização proporcionou, significativamente, as maiores produtividades de alho, elevando consideravelmente a quantidade de bulbos de melhor valor comercial (‘classe 6’), e reduzindo a quantidade de bulbos do tipo ‘descarte’. As temperaturas negativas de vernalização também proporcionaram maior massa de plantas, em todas as épocas avaliadas. O ponto de maturação normal proporcionou ganhos de produtividade total de bulbos. O uso de temperaturas negativas na vernalização proporciona incrementos na produtividade de alho cultivar Ito, nas condições brasileiras.

RESUMO Os programas de melhoramento vegetal têm investido no desenvolvimento de cebolas com alto padrão comercial e para tal dependem dos recursos genéticos disponíveis para a obtenção de híbridos comerciais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar parâmetros genéticos, diversidade genética e as correlações fenotípicas e genotípicas de caracteres relacionados à produção de cebola. O experimento foi realizado em Uberlândia - Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram avaliadas 53 linhagens de cebola. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos ao acaso. Foram avaliadas 13 características de planta e bulbo. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas no programa Genes e R. Observou-se a existência de variabilidade genética entre os genótipos para a maioria dos caracteres ao nível de 1% pelo teste F. A herdabilidade da maioria dos caracteres apresentou valores moderados a altos (≥ 70%) e relação CVg/CVe alta (≥1). O método UPGMA possibilitou separar os genótipos em 20 grupos e de forma semelhante o método de Tocher separou os mesmos em 19 grupos. Os grupos que mais se destacaram foram V, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX e XX. Houve seis correlações fenotípicas significativas pelo teste t com grau de associação baixo a moderado, e as correlações genotípicas, em sua maioria, mostraram-se superiores às fenotípicas e apresentaram o mesmo sinal. A partir dos parâmetros genéticos estudados existe alta possibilidade de ganhos na seleção. Há ampla variabilidade genética para os caracteres estudados o que permitiu a separação de grupos de genitores divergentes. Adicionalmente, as correlações fenotípicas e genotípicas mostraram inviabilidade para seleção indireta.

ABSTRACT Plant breeding programs have been investing in the development of high commercial standard onions; thus, they depend on the genetic resources available for obtaining commercial hybrids. The objective of this study was to evaluate genetic parameters and diversity, and phenotypic and genotypic correlations of characters related to onion production. The experiment was conducted in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fifty-three onion strains were evaluated, and a randomized block design was used. The number of plant and bulb characteristics evaluated was 13. The statistical analyses were performed using Genes and R software. A genetic variability among the genotypes was found for most of the characters at 1% level of significance in the F test. The heritability of most characters presented moderate to high values (≥ 70%) and high CVg/CVe ratio (≥ 1). The UPGMA method separated the genotypes into 20 groups, while the Tocher method separated them into 19 groups. The groups that stood out were V, XIV, XV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, and XX. The results of t-test showed six significant phenotypic correlations with low to moderate degree of association, and the genotypic correlations, in most cases, were higher than the phenotypic ones and showed the same sign. From the genetic parameters studied, the possibility of gains in the selection is high. The separation of groups of divergent genitors was possible due to the wide genetic variability for the studied characters. Moreover, the phenotypic and genotypic correlations showed that indirect selection is not feasible.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o efeito de reguladores de crescimento de plantas (RCP) na indução de calos a partir de cotilédones de Enterolobium contortisiliquum cultivados in vitro, bem como avaliar a atividade inibitória de tripsina nestes calos. Cotilédones de E. contortisiliquum foram cultivados em meio de cultura suplementado com ácido diclorofenoxiacético (2,4-D), picloram (PIC), cinetina (KIN) e 6-benzilaminopurina (BAP). Foram mensuradas, após 60 dias, massa de calo, atividade inibitória de tripsina, observações morfogenéticas e citoquímicas, e atividade biológica. O diagrama de Pareto mostrou que apenas 0,5 mg L-1 de PIC influenciou o aumento da massa fresca, enquanto 0,5 mg L-1 de BAP influenciou a massa seca. O gráfico de análise de componentes principais mostrou a formação de dois clusters claros. A atividade inibitória de tripsina é alcançada em maior intensidade no tratamento com 0,5 mg L-1 de 2,4-D + 2,0 mg L-1 de PIC + 0,5 mg L-1 de KIN + 2,0 mg L-1 de BAP. A combinação de RCP em diferentes doses causa intensa formação de calo. Baixas concentrações de RCP resultam em maior massa fresca, massa seca e atividade biológica. A utilização de RCP é eficiente na obtenção de calos de E. contortisiliquum com satisfatória atividade inibitória de tripsina.

Abstract The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators (PGR) on the induction of calli from cotyledons of Enterolobium contortisiliquum grown in vitro, as well as to evaluate the inhibitory activity of trypsin in these calli. Cotyledons of E. contortisiliquum were cultivated in culture medium supplemented with dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), picloram (PIC), kinetin (KIN), and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Callus mass, inhibitory activity of trypsin, morphogenetic and cytochemical observations, and biological activity were measured after 60 days. The Pareto diagram showed that only 0.5 mg L-1 PIC influenced the increase of fresh mass, whereas 0.5 mg L-1 BAP influenced dry mass. The principal component analysis plot showed the formation of two clear clusters. The inhibitory activity of trypsin is achieved at a higher intensity in the treatment with 0.5 mg L-1 2,4-D + 2.0 mg L-1 PIC + 0.5 mg L-1 KIN + 2.0 mg L-1 BAP. The combination of PGR at different rates causes an intense callus formation. Low concentrations of PGR result in a higher fresh mass, dry mass, and biological activity. The use of PGR is efficient in obtaining E. contortisiliquum calli with a satisfactory inhibitory activity of trypsin.

ABSTRACT The lack of knowledge of the genetic parameters and the type of gene action results in difficulties to obtain varieties that combine agronomic and functional characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine the type of gene action associated with the contents of chlorophyll and agronomic characteristics in lettuce populations. The research was conducted at the Experimental Station of Vegetables, Monte Carmelo, Brazil. To perform the crosses and obtain the generations P1, P2, F1, F2, Bc1 and Bc2 the genotypes UFU-Albina#2, UFU-Albina#3, UFU-Lisa124#2#1, UFU-Crespa199#1#1 and UFU-Lisa217#5#2 were used as parents. The generations were evaluated for three characteristics: number of leaves, plant diameter and chlorophyll content. The parameters: genetic, phenotypic, environmental and additive variance, the dominance in F2, heritability in the broad and narrow-sense, the average degree of dominance based on averages, number of genes, the measure of the dominance deviations, additive effects and all interactions of ‘additive x additive’, ‘additive x dominant’ and ‘dominant x dominant’ type, were evaluated. Chlorophyll content was the most influenced by the environment. Plant diameter had the highest narrow-sense heritability for the cross UFU-Lisa-124#2#1 x UFU-Albina#3 (82.1%). The number of genes for the number of leaves varied from inconclusive to a minimum of 9 genes. The gene interactions for number of leaves were of overdominance type, while for plant diameter and for chlorophyll content the gene interactions were of partial dominance. The characteristics are suggested as being of polygenic or oligogenic nature.

RESUMO O desconhecimento dos parâmetros genéticos e o tipo de ação gênica resultam em dificuldades na obtenção de variedades que combinam características agronômicas e funcionais. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o tipo de ação gênica envolvida com o conteúdo de clorofila e características agronômicas em populações de alface. A pesquisa foi realizada na Estação Experimental de Hortaliças, Monte Carmelo, Brasil. Para realizar os cruzamentos e obter as gerações P1, P2, F1, F2, Bc1 e Bc2, os genótipos UFU-Albina#2, UFUAlbina#3, UFU-Lisa124#2#1, UFU-Crespa199#1 e UFU-Lisa217#5#2 foram usados como parentais. As gerações foram avaliadas para três características (número de folhas, diâmetro das plantas e teor de clorofila) e analisados os seguintes parâmetros: variância genética, ambiental, fenotípica, aditiva, dominância em F2, herdabilidade no sentido amplo, herdabilidade no sentido restrito, grau médio de dominância baseado em médias, número de genes, medida dos desvios da dominância, medida dos efeitos aditivos, medida de todas interações do tipo aditiva x aditiva, aditiva x dominante e dominante x dominante. O teor de clorofila foi a característica mais influenciada pelo ambiente. O diâmetro de planta apresentou a maior herdabilidade no sentido restrito para o cruzamento UFU-Lisa-124#2#1 x UFU-Albina#3 (82,1%). O número de genes para a característica de número de folhas oscilou desde valores inconclusivos até um máximo de 9 genes. As interações gênicas para número de folhas demonstraram ser do tipo sobredominância enquanto que para diâmetro de plantas e teor de clorofila do tipo dominância parcial. Sugere-se que as características avaliadas são de natureza poligênica ou oligogênica.

RESUMO O gesso é utilizado na agricultura para o fornecimento de nutrientes ao sistema solo-planta, aumento da profundidade do sistema radicular das culturas e, também, para mitigar os efeitos do estresse hídrico nas plantas. No entanto, seu uso indiscriminado pode levar à redução do conteúdo de nutrientes catiônicos da superfície do solo, principalmente o potássio. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a viabilidade da utilização de gesso, associado à aplicação de potássio, no cultivo de couve-flor, cultivar Sharon. O experimento foi conduzido em esquema fatorial 5×5, sendo avaliadas cinco doses de K (0, 100, 180, 240 e 360 kg ha−1 de K2O) e cinco doses de gesso (0, 500, 1.000, 2.000 e 4.000 kg ha−1) no delineamento em blocos completos casualizados, com três repetições. Foram determinados os teores foliares de N, P, K, Ca, S, Mg, B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn e a massa comercial da cabeça, o diâmetro da cabeça, o diâmetro do pedúnculo e a altura da cabeça. A aplicação de 360 kg ha−1 de K2O resultou no aumento de 29,69% no teor foliar de K e 18,94% na massa comercial da cabeça, em relação à dose de 0 kg ha−1 de K2O. A aplicação da dose máxima de gesso, resultou na redução dos teores foliares de enxofre (14,71%) e manganês (25,11%) e, aumento dos teores foliares de cobre (16,97%). Com base nos resultados observados, conclui-se que para a cultura da couve-flor, as doses de gesso e K2O recomendadas são de, respectivamente, 4.000 e 360 kg ha−1.

ABSTRACT Gypsum is widely used in agriculture to supply nutrients to the soil-plant system. However, the excessive use of gypsum may lead to a reduction of cationic soil nutrients such as potassium in the most superficial soil layer. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using gypsum and potassium for cauliflower crop nutritional status and commercial production. The experiment was conducted in 5×5 factorial scheme, corresponding to five K doses (0, 100, 180, 240, 360 kg ha−1 of K2O) and five gypsum doses (0, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 kg ha−1) in dystrophic Red Latosol. Leaf N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents, commercial head mass, diameter and height and peduncle diameter were evaluated. The application of 360 kg ha−1 of K2O resulted in 29.69% more K in cauliflower leaf and 18.94% more commercial head mass compared to the non-application of K. The application of 4000 kg ha−1 of gypsum resulted in reductions of leaf S and Mn and increase in leaf Cu. Based on the results observed, 4000 kg ha−1 of gypsum and 360 kg ha−1 K2O could be required for high cauliflower production.

RESUMO A avaliação de acessos em um banco de germoplasma é essencial para determinar os potenciais genitores em programas de conservação, especialmente para árvores nativas. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a diversidade genética entre 68 genótipos de Amburana cearensis situados em diferentes localidades no estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Os padrões genéticos foram avaliados por marcadores moleculares Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) e a divergência genética por meio de análises multivariadas empregando-se diferentes métodos de agrupamento. O método de otimização empregado (Tocher) foi concordante com todos os modelos hierárquicos utilizados, onde o agrupamento dos genótipos ocorreu de forma semelhante, especificamente para o acesso BB116, sendo este um importante material genético a ser preservado e estudado. Dentre os vários métodos hierárquicos aplicados, o de Ligação Média apresentou maior poder de discriminação, permitindo a identificação de maior quantidade de grupos divergentes, inferindo assim grande diversidade genética entre os acessos de A. cearensis.

ABSTRACT The evaluation of accessions in a germplasm bank is essential for determining the potential parents in conservation programs, especially for native trees. This study aimed to determine the genetic diversity among 68 Amburana cearensis genotypes from different locations in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Their genetic patterns were evaluated by Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular markers and genetic divergence was evaluated through multivariate analyses using different clustering methods. The optimization method used (Tocher) was in agreement with all the hierarchical models used, in which clustering of the genotypes occurred similarly, specifically for the accession BB116, which is an important genetic material to be preserved and studied. Among the various hierarchical methods applied, the Average Linkage method exhibited higher discrimination power, allowing identification of a larger number of divergent groups, thus implying wide genetic diversity among A. cearensis accessions.

RESUMO A utilização de fertilizantes em doses adequadas promovem impactos positivos na produção e no meio ambiente. Portanto, objetivou-se avaliar a influência de doses de nitrogênio na produtividade da batata cultivares Ágata e Atlantic em Unaí-MG e Ágata em Mucuge-BA. O cultivo de Ágata e Atlantic foi conduzido em Minas Gerais (Unaí), entre maio a agosto e junho a setembro de 2014, respectivamente. Já na Bahia (Mucugê), Ágata foi cultivada entre setembro a dezembro de 2014. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso. Foram avaliadas as doses de 0, 30, 70, 120 e 280 kg ha-1 de N. Na fase de desenvolvimento foram avaliados os teores de macro e micronutrientes em folhas de batateira. No final do ciclo foi avaliada a produção de tubérculos. Na ausência de aplicação de N, observou-se que o P, K, S e B apresentaram teores inferiores ao adequado em Atlantic-MG, os teores de S e Zn foram inferiores ao adequado em Ágata-MG e os teores de N, K, Mg e S foram inferiores ao adequado em Ágata-BA. Os demais nutrientes atenderam as necessidades da batateira, sendo o incremento de N favoráveis ao aumento dos teores da maioria dos nutrientes, em todos os experimentos. As doses máximas de N variam entre 138 e 194 kg ha-1, em região de CTC alta e baixa, respectivamente. O conhecimento da interação entre atributos do solo, condições climáticas e especificidades das cultivares permite aprimorar a predição de dosagem e redução na quantidade ótima, sem afetar os rendimentos.

ABSTRACT The use of fertilizers at appropriate doses positively impacts the production and the environment. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the influence of nitrogen (N) rates on the crop yields of the potato cultivars, Ágata and Atlantic in Unaí, Minas Gerais (MG), and Ágata in Mucugê, Bahia (BA), Brazil. The cultivation of Ágata and Atlantic was conducted in MG from May to August and June to September 2014, respectively. In BA, Ágata was cultivated between September and December 2014. A random block experimental design was used with treatment rates of 0, 30, 70, 120, and 280 kg ha-1 of N. The macro and micronutrient concentrations in potato leaves were evaluated. At the end of the growth cycle, the production of tubers was also evaluated. In the absence of N application, it was observed that P, K, S, and B were below the adequate levels in Atlantic-MG, the S and Zn levels were lower than the adequate levels in Ágata -MG, and the N, K, Mg, and S levels were less than the adequate levels in Ágata-BA. The other nutrients met the needs of the potato, with the N increase being favorable to the levels of most nutrients in all experiments. The maximum rates of N varied between 138 and 194 kg ha-1 in the high and low cationic exchange capacity (CEC) regions, respectively. The knowledge of the interaction among soil attributes, climate conditions and crop specificities allows for the improved prediction of the dosage of N and a reduction in the optimum amount without affecting yields.

RESUMO O uso comercial de híbridos de cebola é preferido pelos produtores. Em contrapartida, a produção de sementes híbridas de cebola é extremamente ineficiente. Isso se deve ao fato do uso de linhagens obtidas por sucessivas autofecundações assumindo o efeito de depressão por endogamia per se. Diante disso, faz-se necessário buscar novas alternativas capazes de reduzir o efeito de depressão por endogamia nas linhagens. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar possíveis diferenças de polimorfismo e níveis de heterozigosidade de linhagens obtidas de plantas intercruzadas e autofecundadas. Foram utilizadas 12 populações de cebola pertencentes ao programa de melhoramento da Bayer (Granex, IPA-1, IPA-2 e IPA-3), obtidas por autofecundação de uma planta, entrecruzamento de duas plantas ou intercruzamento de três plantas. Três indivíduos de cada linhagem foram utilizados nas análises. As amplificações foram realizadas a partir do uso de 8 microsatélite primers com maior polimorfismo, de acordo com estudos de caracterização de germoplasma realizados pela CITA-Espanhola. A heterozigosidade geralmente diminui com a autofertilização e aumenta à medida que mais plantas são usadas no cruzamento. Os marcadores SSRs usados no presente estudo foram eficientes para detectar variabilidade nos diferentes backgrounds genéticos. Com os resultados obtidos, sugere-se realizar a obtenção de híbridos entre as diferentes combinações e analisar o desempenho per se das diferentes modalidades de obtenção de linhagens propostas na presente pesquisa.

ABSTRACT The commercial use of onion hybrids is preferred by producers. In contrast, the production of hybrid onion seeds is extremely inefficient. This is due to the use of lineages obtained by successive self-fertilizations assuming the effect of inbreeding depression per se. Therefore, it is necessary to understand new alternatives to reduce the effect of inbreeding depression in the strains. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible differences in polymorphism and levels of heterozygosity of strains obtained from intercrossed and self-fertilized plants. Twelve onion populations belonging to Bayer’s breeding program (Granex, IPA-1, IPA-2 and IPA-3) were used, obtained by self-fertilization of one plant, intercrossing of two plants or intercrossing of three plants. Three individuals from each strain were used in the analyzes. The amplifications were performed using 8 microsatellite primers with greater polymorphism, according to germplasm characterization studies carried out by CITA. Heterozygosity generally decreases with self-fertilization and increases as more plants are used in the cross. The SSR markers used in the present study were efficient in detecting variability in different genetic backgrounds. With the results obtained, it is suggested to carry out the obtaining of hybrids between the different combinations and to analyze the performance per se of the different modalities of obtaining strains proposed in the present research.

Abstract Mitigating reductions in vigor in onion seed production has been a great challenge to breeding programs. Therefore, we compared the effects of inbreeding depression among populations obtained from self-fertilization and crossbreeding with two and three plants. We evaluated eleven populations and three breeding methods (two and three-plant crossbreeding, and self-fertilization of one plant) and measured the characteristics related to seed yield (plant appearance, stem vigor, number of umbels, flowering uniformity, fruit setting, and resistance to Alternaria) from 2014 to 2015. Thirteen RAPD molecular markers were used to determine the genetic divergence among populations derived from different breeding methods. We found that inbreeding depression affects plant vigor in early generations that have greater heterozygosity. Three-plant crossbreeding results in greater seed yield in populations with low levels of inbreeding. The populations obtained from self-fertilization and two- and three-plant crossbreeding were genetically similar, demonstrating the efficiency of obtaining inbred lines without genetic divergence.

RESUMO: Lavanda é uma planta ornamental aromática que é amplamente utilizada nas indústrias de perfumaria, farmacêutica, cosmética e alimentícia e por isso é importante estudar maneiras de promover a produção dessa matéria-prima. Para tanto, foram realizados quatro experimentos com o objetivo de estudar a germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial in vitro da lavanda. No primeiro experimento testou-se a eficiência do uso de peróxido de hidrogênio no pré-tratamento de sementes inoculadas em meios de cultura com diferentes concentrações de ácido giberélico. Além disso, foi avaliado a influência do uso de lâmpadas Growlux e de lâmpadas fluorescentes brancas em plântulas cultivadas nos meios MS e LS em concentrações de sais de 50 e 100%. Por fim, também estudou-se o efeito dos reguladores ácido giberélico, putrescina, espermina e espermidina em diferentes concentrações. Melhores resultados foram encontrados quando o pré-tratamento com peróxido de hidrogênio foi aplicado às sementes com posterior inoculação em meio contendo 2,5 mg L-1 de ácido giberélico. O uso de lâmpadas Growlux não influenciou as características avaliadas quando comparado ao uso de lâmpadas fluorescentes brancas, entretanto observou-se que as espécies se desenvolvem melhor em meio LS. Com relação ao uso de poliaminas, verificou-se que a germinação, parte aérea e número de folhas das plântulas foram favorecidas na concentração de 0,5 mg L-1, exceto quando se aplicou espermina, que resultou em menor número de folhas nessa condição.

ABSTRACT: Lavender is an aromatic ornamental plant that is used widely in the perfume, pharmaceutical, cosmetical and food industries. That is why it is important to study ways to promote a production of lavender raw material. For this, four experiments were carried out in order to study the germination and initial in vitro development of lavender. In the first part the efficiency of the use of hydrogen peroxide in the pre-treatment of seeds inoculated in culture media with different concentrations of gibberellic acid was evaluated. Besides that, the influence of the use of Growlux lamps and white fluorescent lamps on plantlets cultivated in MS and LS media at salts concentrations of 50 and 100% was evaluated. Finally, the effect of the gibberellic acid, putrescine, spermine and spermidine in different concentrations was evaluated. Better results were estimated when hydrogen peroxide pretreatment was applied to the seeds with subsequent inoculation in a medium containing 2,5 mg L-1 of gibberellic acid. The use of Growlux lamps did not influence the characteristics observed when compared to the use of white fluorescent lamps, however it was concluded that the species develops more in a LS medium. Concerning the use of polyamines was found that germination, aerial part and number of leaves of the seedlings were generally favored at the concentration of 0,5 mg L-1 except when spermine was applied, which resulted in a lower number of leaves under this condition.

RESUMO: O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o rendimento de madeira e o teor de óleo essencial de clones de eucalipto em diferentes arranjos, consorciado com sorgo. Foram utilizados 3 clones de eucalipto: Clone 1 (MA2001-Eucalyptus camaldulensis x E. tereticornis); Clone 2 (A144-Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis); Clone 3 (GG100 - Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis). Os clones de eucalipto foram plantados nos diferentes arranjos: em linha dupla, sendo 2x3+15m e 2x3+20m; linhas simples 10x2m e em linha tripla, sendo 2x3x2+10m. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos referentes a 3 clones de eucalipto e 4 arranjos de plantas diferentes. Os resultados mostraram que menores ou maiores espaçamentos não influenciaram no rendimento de óleo essencial e no diâmetro da altura do peito. Porém, menores espaçamentos podem proporcionar maior matéria fresca de ramos e folhas por planta. O clone MA2001 (Camaldulensis x Tereticornis) por ter apresentado maior altura de plantas, maior matéria fresca de galho e folhas por planta, maior volume de madeira por hectare e maior produtividade de óleo essencial pode ser o mais indicado para cultivo em condições com maior déficit hídrico.

ABSTRACT: The objective was to estimate the wood yield and essential oil content in three clones of eucalyptus that were planted in four contrasting arrangements and intercropped with sorghum. Eucalyptus clones MA2001 (Eucalyptus camaldulensis x E. tereticornis), A144 (Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis), and GG100 (Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis), were planted in single rows (10x2m), double rows (2x3+15m and 2x3+20m); and, triple rows (2x3x2+10m) in a randomized, complete block design experiment with four replicates. Our results demonstrated that planting spacing did not influence the essential oil yield or diameter at breast height in the clones. However, higher density plantings were shown to result in higher fresh weight of branches and leaves per plant. MA2001 grew taller, produced higher quantity of fresh biomass of branches and leaves per plant and volume of wood per hectare, and yielded more essential oil yield than the other clones. We concluded that MA2001 is the most suitable of the clones tested here for cultivation in water deficit conditions.

RESUMO O tomate é um importante componente da dieta humana, pois é rico em sais minerais e compostos antioxidante que sequestram os radicais livres presentes nas células do organismo, evitando vários distúrbios na saúde humana. O presente trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos de fontes e doses de nitrogênio sobre a capacidade antioxidante e a qualidade físico-química dos frutos do tomateiro. O experimento foi realizado na cidade de Vitória da conquista - BA, no campo experimental da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições em esquema fatorial 3 × 3 + 1 (testemunha), totalizando 40 parcelas. Os tratamentos foram compostos por três fontes de Nitrogênio (nitrato de cálcio, ureia e sulfato de amônio) e três doses (140, 280 e 420 kg ha-1). Após a colheita foram avaliados os atributos da qualidade do fruto: firmeza, pH, acidez titulável, sólidos solúveis, ratio, ácido ascórbico, DPPH, compostos fenólicos, carotenoides, flavonóides. Os níveis crescentes de N influenciaram negativamente nos conteúdos de acidez titulável, por outro lado, proporcionou aumento na relação SS/AT. Os incrementos de N também reduziram o conteúdo de compostos bioativos, exceto carotenoide, consequentemente prejudicou a atividade antioxidante.

ABSTRACT Tomatoes are an important component of the human diet because they are rich in minerals and antioxidants that sequester free radicals in cells, preventing various disorders that affect human health. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen sources and concentrations on antioxidant capacity and physical and chemical quality of tomato fruit. The experiment was conducted in Vitória da Conquista, state of Bahia, Brazil, in the experimental field of Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia. The experimental setup included a randomized block design with four replicates in a factorial layout of 3 × 3 + 1 (control), for a total of 40 plots. The three treatments comprised different nitrogen sources (calcium nitrate, urea, and ammonium sulfate), applied in three doses (140, 280, and 420 kg ha-1). We evaluated firmness, pH, titratable acidity - TA, soluble solid - SS, SS/TA ratio, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and DPPH inhibition, were evaluated after samples were harvested. However, increasing concentrations of N adversely affected the acidity and led to an increase in the SS/TA ratio. Increasing the N concentration also reduced the content of bioactive compounds. excluding carotenoids, which consequently impaired antioxidant activity.
